The honours program offers a rigorous examination of a particular subject area for those who desire a more specialized undergraduate preparation. This is the preferred program for students who wish to continue their education at the graduate level. Students normally enter the program after first year, although you may be eligible to enter the program later in your undergraduate studies. To earn a BA Honours degree, a student must successfully complete 120 credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 3.00 in all courses. Students in the honours program do not complete a major and a minor, but rather an honours subject, or two subjects in the case of a double honours program. The program differs from the advanced program by requiring more courses in the honours field and by providing a greater intensity and depth of study. Students should apply to enter the honours program only after successfully completing a minimum of 24 credit hours of coursework.

Columbia College's University Transfer Programs offer first and second year university courses for transfer to major universities across Canada and the United States. Over the years, Columbia College has consistently been one of the top three providers of international students to the University of British Columbia. Columbia College also sends large numbers of students to Simon Fraser University, Vancouver's other major university. Students in Columbia College's university transfer programs benefit from small class sizes and extra interaction with instructors. Statistics compiled by the British Columbia Council on Admissions and Transfer show that Columbia College students have an above average university admission and degree completion rate. In most university programs, the first year is a general year in which students choose a broad range of courses in addition to courses in their area of specialization. Specialization does not usually begin until the second year. A pre-Commerce year has been introduced in several universities. Depending on the university to which a student may go, a one-year transfer program at Columbia College usually fulfills requirements for the pre-professional degree program (such as Commerce) or for the first year of a four-year degree program (such as Economics). The University Transfer program will be of interest to students who seek transfer to a degree program at a Canadian or American university. Many students transfer after completing 24 to 30 credits at Columbia College. For Business students, there is also a complete second year program available at Columbia College. Most first year Arts and Social Science courses are introductory and require no prerequisite in the subject area. All Science courses have secondary level science prerequisites. University courses earn three to six credits, and a full semester course load may consist of 9 to 15 credits. A minimum of two semesters will be required to be eligible to transfer to the second year of an undergraduate degree program at a university. Students in the Science program can choose from a wide selection of courses including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Computer Science, and Mathematics. Many courses are taught in science labs, enabling students to conduct experiments and get a better grasp of scientific theory. Students can complete between 24 to 60 credits before transferring to second or third year at a university science program.

Students will take full advantage of Sudbury’s idyllic location and Laurentian University’s full depth of mining, environmental, mechanical and mechatronic engineering expertise to study resource management processes. A global centre for mining technology and research, Sudbury is the site of the world’s largest mineral exploration and mining-service clusters in the world. It is home to two of the world’s deepest mines and is the corporate headquarter for numerous multinational mining companies. Ravaged for decades by industrial pollution, it has since been recognized by the United Nations for its widely celebrated remediation and rehabilitation success story, now referenced as the Sudbury Protocol. The world now turns to Sudbury for environmental solutions. Laurentian’s proximity to the mining operations of Vale, Glencore, Kidd Creek, Hemlo, Red Lake, Goldcorp, Placer Dome, and mines in northwestern Quebec, as well as E.B. Eddy’s large scale wood processing facilities at Espanola, make it a natural laboratory for the study of environmental impact, management and ecological recovery issues.

The Economics program offers training in core economic theory courses as well as a number of field options. Most students opt for the non-thesis option given that it is the standard in most graduate Economics programs in North America. This option consists of eight half courses and an extended research paper. Many students will take six courses during their first year (three in fall, three in winter); two courses in the fall of the second year and complete their extended paper in the winter of the second year. To proceed to the co-op option, students must complete at least six half courses chosen from those required for the thesis and non-thesis options. The Departmental recommendation for the work terms will be based on the student’s academic performance and an interview with the Selection Committee consisting of representatives of the Department and the Student Success Centre. In consultation with the Department, the Career and Co-operative Education Services will make every effort to obtain suitable placements. It combines the technical and practical methodologies of GIS with the systems analysis and design skills from computer science to provide a strong foundation in this growing field. Minors | Adding a minor to your degree is a great way to explore academic interests beyond your major. A minor is a set of courses comprising a secondary focus of interest. It is generally not related to your major. A minor may be required or optional. Pursue a second passion by adding a minor to your degree. Honours thesis | If your GPA is high enough in your fourth year, you can opt to complete an undergraduate thesis course. This is an excellent opportunity for you to earn an “Honours Thesis” designation on your degree. Experience learning | Our students have a number of experiential learning opportunities available to them including co-operative education, international exchanges, independent and applied studies as well as volunteer opportunities. uLethbridge is the only university in Alberta to offer co-operative education to all majors in the arts & sciences, at both the undergrad and grad level. Transfer students can actually head out on their first work term before ever stepping foot on campus! For example, many transfer students have completed a summer work term before starting classes in September. Skills acquired | In addition to developing exceptional written and oral communication skills in this program, you’ll also develop strong critical and analytical thinking skills, advanced information acquisition and management skills, as well as precise attention to detail.
